This one has stumped me for awhile now...internet searches have returned nothing and it's time to "ask the experts" (cue Jeopardy music). My first impression months ago when I found this cent in a roll from the grocery store was that it appeared to be part of the Memorial clashed on Lincoln's forehead, and an unknown die chip on the E of CENTS on the reverse. Further inspection showed a long "wavy" die crack running through his hair as well, and I wondered if the mark across his forehead was another die crack. The lettering on the motto is extremely thick but with no rotation. I have a hard time distinguishing the large date from the small date in the 1960 which doesn't help my searching, but I still have not found anything like this on the internet. I hope some of the variety guys and gals can give me a hand with this one because now my curiosity has turned to frustration, and this is one of the more interesting coins that I've found in awhile roll searching. Thanks all for looking!
Just common die cracks, nothing special. I see no evidence of a clash on your coin. Die clashes occur primarily in the FIELDS, not so much on the devices. The design elements are recessed into the dies so when they clash, basically just the "outlines" from the opposite side transfer.
Thank you, that's what I was wondering-at first the mark in his forehead appeared to be made from the marks on the to of the Memorial, which had me wondering if the die chip on the E in CENTS was a clash but the more you look at something of course the more your mind twists it around! Can you tell from the pic if this is the small date or the large date? I've learned to tell most years apart, but 1960 still stumps me...
