Today I stumbled across an odd penny in a roll I purchased from a store. The rim is twice the thickness of a normal penny. I have spent hours searching for information about what it is, if it's an error, an even it's worth, any thoughts would be helpful and greatly appreciated. New to forums and cointalk
Those will do. I suspect that the coin has been "spooned". Someone continues to tap the edge of the coin with the underside of a spoon while rotating it. This action causes the edge to become wider. Chris
"Spooned" huh, interesting. Would there be any legitimate reason to do this to a coin? Thank you for your replies. Did they just do it because of like boredom or something similar?
Sometimes it's because someone has nothing better to do, but if it is done properly, rings are made for sale from almost any denomination. https://www.bing.com/images/search?...+ring&qpvt=coin+ring&qpvt=coin+ring&FORM=IGRE Chris
Oh wow that's real interesting, I never knew about coin rings. Pretty cool!. Hey thanks for the info very much appreciated. Is there any way to confirm if thats what has been done to this Coin?
Can you check the wieght? It should be 2.5 grams. Or show clear photo of the edge? It almost looks like it has a bezel type ring around it.
@PaleteromanR34, welcome to the asylum. Here, take a look at look at this, from a sister asylum: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=273924.

eddiespin, yea mine seems to have some weird collar as well, and theres no show of hammer marks, and seems to be still perfectly round..well same as any other penny, thanks for the link
They're kind of cool, I sometimes keep them as examples. Hey, why don't you take up the hobby? Just start collecting coins and showing them to us, we'll take it from there...
i just started up like four days ago, i had some 1960s quarters, i startes roll hunting, i found this penny in a roll i got from a convenience store, and i have a nickel i will be posting on the error coin side shortly, so far im having great fun!!
Just keep roll-searching when you have the time. There's no better way to get into this hobby than that...nor any cheaper way. Save your money for now and roll-search. You can't lose doing that, and you'll learn along the way once you start seeing the different stuff that's out there. Just have fun, that's you only obligation, lol.
