Does anyone know what variety this is?

Please, how would you grade this?

    Thanks

    I'd say it's a F-15/VF-20.

Wow, that's a big difference between the two of you - Any ideas where I should go to try and figure out the variety?

    Thanks

    Grades (IMHO):

TPG net grade: Fine details, cleaned, net VG.
    EAC grade: F 15 details, Scudzy, net G 5.

I can't tell from the photos which of the 46 different 1848 varieities it is -- they are difficult enough to attribute in mint-state. However, a closeup of the date would help. I have a Grellman reference and if you post a closeup pic of the date, I'll take a shot. Be forewarned, attribution of a coin in this state may not be possible.

    Hope this helps...Mike

Can you get it any closer/larger? Also, don't sharpen the photo at all -- I'll take care of that. In fact, take the largest photos you can of the entire coin, along with the max-sized closeup of the date -- that will all help.

No rush, I'm headed out in a little bit so it is unlikely I'll have a chance to really dig into it until tomorrow afternoon.

    Take care.....Mike

Here is the best I could do. I have not done anything to the picture except crop them and compress them to a file size that will fit.

    Hope this helps.

Obviously Mike knows his stuff, so who am I to disagree.
(And I probably would not anyway).

I put uncompressed photos in the members gallery for anyone that wants to see it without all the pixelation.

Thanks everyone - will post a few more for your viewing pleasure... :)

Well my Newcomb book only shows 35 varieties. From the date I would say N-8. For the grade VG-8 cleaned. Looks like the coin has found a good home.

Thanks Mark, Yes - It's a keeper for sure. Have to wonder what it looked like before it was cleaned? No matter, still a nice piece of american history.

I usually collect non-US coins but I have these two large cents from 1848.

You can grade them also, please.

    Hi willieboyd,

The top coin appears that it might squeek by with an EF-40 (original) Brown and the bottom coin will grade at VF-20 with an old cleaning!
