I'd like some opinions on the grades of these. Thanks. P.S.- As always, sorry about the quality of my scans.
Nice 38-D!!! I bought mine a few years back before they really took off for I think it was $15-- I think yours just made VF20! Speedy
Thanks. 15 bucks, I should have got back into the hobby earlier! LOL. Anyway, I was very very pleased to pick up that nice VF for $90, at a show back in October.
Adam: $90 for a VF? Trends is $225. November bid was $130, Ask was $140. That was a steal! Good deal. You bargain better than I do. Hmmm....are you busy Sunday? I'm going to a show.
The bust (both sides) must be outlined for a vf, so the 38D is an f15, and I agree the 43 is an au. very nice find on the 38D at that price.
I think you got a heck of a deal---when I got mine I was buying a large part of a collection---the guy wanted me to give him prices and such from a printed book so I used the newest Red Book (this was a few years back)---I only graded the coin VG and at that time the price was $20-$30 I think---the coin was in an old PVC holder and I told the guy that since it had PVC it would need to be dipped and that could lower the value so I offered $15---he took it and I dipped it--it didn't seem to hurt it....so I sent it to ANACS and it came back F12....I still don't agree with the grade as I can only see it as a VG. Speedy
Haha. Frank, if you'd like to pay for my airfare, I'd LOVE to go to a show with you. Anyway, I got that deal by closely looking at Walkers on about 120 different tables, narrowing down to what I thought were the best 3 deals on 38D's at the show, and carefully examining those 3. Then I decided that this coin was a great deal at the 100 dollar price tag, and then I was quite surprised when I offered the guy $90, and he said "hmmmm....OK" Anyway, thanks guys. My personal grade on those 2 coins was VF20, and AU53 or 55. But I'm still learning so I wanted some second opinions.
AU50 Reverse - Traces of wear show on high points of wings and at center of head. All leg feathers are visible. Half of the mint luster is still present. XF45 Reverse - Small flat spots show on high points of breast and legs. Wing feathers have nearly full details. Part of the mint luster is still present. Now, which one of these descriptions comes closer to matching the coin pictured ?
Hmmmm...going by those criteria, I would probably have to say XF45 due to the apparent wear on the breast.
...And after checking my official ANA grading standards, those criteria are the offical ones. LOL. I think the obverse, of the coin I posted is higher than XF45 though.
