Just Picked up a couple coins for my wife. Please tell me what you think they grade as.

I would say based on how bold the shield lines/we is it is in the high vf-range for details, however as noted it is quite corroded.

Thank you Woodenspoon, I agree - nice looking coin. My Wife really likes both coins. It was graded as Fine/Very Fine by the seller.

Wonder what caused the corrosion on the obverse.

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

You are correct Zane, Great detail left on the coin, all the lines still visible and clear. Any idea what causes that corrosion. Almost looks like little bits of the coin have just been eaten away.

I would say that it will grade F-12 even with the corrosion! It probably spent a few years in the ground and was more than likely a metal detector find.

    I agree F-12ish or so.

I agree with F to VF, but that corrosion is a killer.

OK, I hate to ask the question because I am afraid of the answer - but here goes.

Based on your feedback and the condition of the coin what price should I have paid for this coin?

    Thanks

    Darryl

Taking the corrosion into consideration, I would have paid/offered about $20 for that coin. Very nice detail though. I like the old 2 cent coins.

Thanks, that's really close to what I paid for it and as it was a combined price for the two coins it may have worked out to exactly that much.

The coin looks great even with the damage from the corrosion. I hope none of black material remaining on the coin does any further damage. I know it is probably hiding further damage so it is not even a question on conservation.
