Rushed home today to open that wonderful $10 2006 AGE Proof my wife got me for Christmas. It is a really nice looking coin - but there is a small scratch on the back. See Attached. Right above "In God We Trust" Should it be acceptable to have a scratch on a coin like this? This is my first Gold coin from the mint and I am a little disappointed. Are my expectations too high or am I justified in my disappointment? Please let me know because I know most of you have much more experience with these issues that I have. Thank you kindly for your thoughts. Darryl
GDJMSP is right, call them and ask for a replacement. Did she get it from the mint? A dealer would probably be easier to get a replacement.
The Mint. I'm going to send it back today. I'm a little surprised that they sent it with a scratch in the surface of the coin.
No it is not acceptable to me. It could just be "luck of the draw" since the mint can not catch everything. I have only had to send one coin back in 20+ years of using the mint. I hope the next coin you get is better.
Thanks Mark, I manage a quality control team so I understand that statement. With all the checks I put in place, sometimes things still get through. My attention to detail is generally much higher than others so I have to make an effort sometimes not to over analyze. In Bonediggers poll the one guy commented that 50% of items from the mint should be returned. With the stories posted recently about the ASE open cases it makes me wonder what's going on. I have bought a number of Silver proofs before and never had an issue. Thanks again...
I'll be willing to bet there is an internal or pipeline "Cherry Picking" operation going on. I used to collect HotWheels and always had a hard time finding TreasureHunts even when I bought a case. I know the stockers and the major retailers all have a case-buster on their staff and the management really doesn't do enough to halt such activity. The one time I really made a stink about it was at a TRU when everytime I asked for a case the tape sealing the case showed signs of tampering, big ones, like being torn and replaced with masking, etc. I finally was allowed to go into the storeroom and pick a case right off the truck and guess who got all indignant, yep 'Joe Stocker' was right there and tried to stop me. Kept saying I wasn't supposed to be back there, Hmmmm.... I finally ended up with a pristine case after management got involved. I've never traded there since then... Ben
Call them if you need, then send it back. State the reason. As long as you have the paper work for it,youll be all set. goodluck.
From the PSGC Web Site - struck thru An error caused by a foreign object that got between the dies and the planchet when a coin was struck. A common Struck Thru error is a piece of wire that leaves an indentation that is usually mistaken for a scratch. Ok, now I understand what a Strike Thru is, how do you tell the difference between a scratch and a strike thru?
On a proof, the strike through will likely have a nice smooth shiny look to it, while a scratch will have a rougher scratched look, perhaps with some displaced metal piled up along the edges of the flaw. As a strike through, I don't think it's big enough to warrant a premium from an error collector, but it is big enough to be an undesirable distraction on what should be an essentially perfect brand new mint product, whatever the flaw is. I would just send it back :thumb:
Thanks XpipedreamR, Will be interesting to see if others agree. Have no experience with error coins so I have no idea what is worth collecting regarding errors.
