The most recent issue of Coin Values had a cover and several articles about the American Eagle Platinum series. In looking around on Ebay I encountered several listings referring to this coin as having been issued "to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the US Mint's Platinum Eagle (SOL) Bullion program.". 2006 PCGS MS69 "10th Anniversary" $10 Platinum Eagle The American Eagle Platinum coins were first issued in 1997. At first I thought this was just bending the truth (10th year of issue being equated with 10th anniversary). (If you believe that, then you should feel comfortable sending your 20 year-old to a bar to buy a drink and you should feel obligated to celebrate your 10th wedding anniversary after 9 years)) But then I saw the photo in the listing which shows a PCGS certified holder with the words "10th Anniversary American Eagle Program". Isn't the real 10th anniversary American Eagle Platinum scheduled for 2007? Is this certification genuine? If so, what exactly is PCGS trying to say? That coin collectors can't count to 10? What will the 2007 PCGS label say, "The REAL 10th anniversary"?
have ya seen the prices on those puppies!!! Or should I say ape's!! Bet ya wish you had some of them huh??? RickieB
Yes the real anniversary set comes out this year but that coin is in a legitimate holder. How they decided to do it as 10th anniversary I don't know but they did, I skipped that label for my coin and went with First Strike.
I guess it's the same reason we celebrated the millennium in 2000. The modern day calender started at 1, not zero. That should have made the 2001.
According to PCGS, 1997 is both the first year of issue and the first anniversary. The actual 10th anniversary is 2007. PCGS isn't saying that collectors can't count to 10 - they're showing that PCGS management can't.
But we didn't celebrate the millenium again in 2001. What is PCGS going to do with the REAL 10th anniversary American Eagle Platinum coins that come out in 2007?
