Always get confused on how to tell the difference between the two. Were both of these coins found buried or error/variety.
But how can I tell since one coin looks dirty on both sides and the other is only on one side? Trying to learn the difference. LOL
It will have a color similar to the soil, dirt. The quarter with environmental exposure toning on the reverse side probably was sitting in a harsh chemical like spilled soda in a cup holder of a car.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but on a regular clad coin's edge you'll see three layers, two of copper-nickel and one of pure copper between. On a missing clad layer coin, one of the copper-nickel layers is missing revealing the pure copper layer underneath.
That is correct. That's why it's called Missing Clad Layer. Most of the time it only affects one side. It is extremely rare for 2 sides to be missing and it only occurs under special conditions. The side that is struck is determined by how the Blank Planchet that's missing the clad layer lands in the striking chamber so it would be 50/50 Here are a few examples from my collection.. The other side of each coin is normal color of clad.
