I am plagued by well-meaning relatives. Anybody else. As Christmas time comes around, many relatives are thinking about what to get me. Many of them know that I am into coins. I really would not mind getting some decent coins for Christmas, but how are people who don't know a thing about coins supposed to know what nice coins are and how much to pay for them if I don't tell them exactly what to get and the max price to pay for it. On more than one occassion, Grandma has called up and said, "I see this Silver Dollar here in the newspaper made by XYZ Mint. It's just $34.95 + $7.95 shipping and handling. It looks nice. Would you want that for Christmas?" It's just almost too much to explain to everyone. :headbang: :computer: ...but they mean well.
Buddy, I can understand your pain. Look at this sweatshirt my Mother-In-Law got me a couple of Christmas's ago. I'd mentioned I was a Civil War Buff and Vola!!! Bone
well you could always ask for an Ebay, HeritageCoins, Teletrade Gift Certificate... or even a U.S. Mint Gift Certificate I have basically the same problem, either my mother gives me a regift of something I gave her the year before. Or she'll hand me a she got off QVC! Last year was the winner.. <mother> you know, i'm getting on in my years, and I want to give all you kids something special this year. I hesitantly held my breath for the Christmas 7-7-7 jackpot. The wife and I got a Hummel.. a Hummel going for $20 on ebay .... ya just gotta luve em... Kiss
I would never expect a relative to somehow figure out what sort of coin to buy because it's too complicated [If I can barely do it for myself, what chance do they have?]. So this year I already tried to make it easy for them. I said I want an uncirculated silver eagle or canadian maple leaf one ounce silver coin from any year, obtainable in any coin shop, and don't spend more than about $10-$12 per coin. It keeps them from getting completely ripped off, makes it easy for them to find, and is nice enough that I genuinely will want to keep it even if I don't need it. One step up from that in complexity would be any silver dollar commemorative from the US Mint. I'm not sure how collectible they really are, but they make nice "giftware." ...but I still expect to get shirts.
I always tell my family members to simply call my dealer. He knows exactly what I like and usually can supply nice coins in any price range for them. I also include the mint catalog with my Christmas list with items "mysteriously" marked.
Hey SteveE "Grave Digger" you changed your avatar! Glad I did not deposit my AGE in one of those graves..hahah My God Bonedigger..you still have that thing? Looks like a good bike cleaning tool if ya ask me...I get the same sort of stuff...always end up stuffiing it in the Salvation Army Bag... RickieB
SAME HERE, Last X-mas it was the 1/oz silver 9/11 commemorative round. Fortunately I was able to exchange it at the dealer for a real coin.
Socks and underwear here. I also place order for coin supplies such as albums and coin books. When the bok comes my wife wraps it right in the box without opening it. I enjoy this because there is no way for her to buy my coins. I also told my mother and father to send me up their coin jar to look thru for a X-mas gift.
On the other side of the coin,no pun intended,my Mom bought me a proof set almost every Christmas from 1964 to 2000 when I started collecting for real and some of those are worth a pretty penny..pun intended.I used to just stick them in an unused kitchen cabinet until they started calling to me.That's how it all started...thanks MA!
Bone- that is quite the shirt. You could wear it the next time you do any car maintenance. I've rid myself of many unwanted articles of clothing that way.
Until recently I got similar types of gifts from my very well meaning mother in law. Clothes were always too big, or too small but never right. Lately she have taken to sending culinary delicasies, you cannot really go wrong there
well, seeing as how i got my new amplifier this year, dont think i'll be getting much. However, i'd like to go raid my grandfathers Safety Deposit Box. But any ASE would be nice.
AH! Question. Would there be any value from sending a collector's set ASE to PCGS to get graded? i'm POSITIVE it'll get PF-69. Maybe 68 if i'm unlucky But, how much are they selling for? and, how much does it cost to get graded and slabbed?
