This small chunkie coin is but 3.1 grams. Perhaps there is not enough there to id this coin, but can someone point me in the right direction? If it is indeed a toughra on the obverse, how many rulers used a toughra for hammered copper and bronze coins? It couldn't be that many. So far, I can find none used on dump coins. Any ideas of where to look? richie
This coin weighs 6.5 grams, my mistake and is 15 mm in diameter. That fits well as a 2/3 falus of Ibrahim Adil II (1580-1627), sultan of Bijapur. In the Fitzwilliams collection, the range of weights for a 2/3 falus is from 5.57 grams to 7.29 grams, 14.5 mm to 17 mm. Though the founding Sultan of the dynasty claimed (or was claimed on his behalf) that he hailed from the Ottoman Empire, Ibrahim Adil II was the only ruler of Bijapur that I could find who actually used what might be called a toughra on his coin. There are, as you would expect, a lot of variations in the 2/3 falus design of Ibrahim. Bijapur was a fascinating Sultanate: a time for the arts and for Sufis. I'll live with the assumption that my coin is from Bijapur until I learn differently. richie
