is it real, should my buddy get this graded it says "KER" on the side of the coin kind of like it says "in god we trust" on he side of presidental dollars thanks stainless
Maybe an expert here can tell if it's fake, but chain cents are faked very often. If someone more knowledgeable than me says it looks real, get it certified by all means, as these are so often faked.EDIT - continental dollar.. not chain cent. duh.
Where'd he find that? It's in the 09 Redbook on page 81. I know nothing about it, and in no way can verify it's authenticity but if it is authentic, it is worth some money. It gives 8 variations of it, all 1776's. This doesn't have the "EG FECIT" on the obverse. It only has one 'R' in "Curency". Which narrows it down to 3 options. If it is Pewter, the cheapest one which would be in G condition, lists at 7k. F- 11k. VF-20k. Says there are only two known of this type made in silver. VF silver one sold for 345k in Jan. 05.
I was just trying to compare some of the details with the example they show in the book. They do say that numerous copies and replicas of these coins have been made over the years. "Authentication is recommended for all pieces". FWIW, compared to the picture in the red book, the base of the 1 in 1776 looks completely different on this than the one in the book. The example shown in the book of this type has hardly anything for nubs coming off the sides at the base while your friend's coin has rather long ones. That's the first red flag. But I'd probably still send it in. It says there's two varieties and I've only got one picture example.
Yeah, more red flags... On the reverse, the 'N' at the end of American is obviously screwed up. The ring at the 11 o'clock position should say GEORGIA and it obvisouly has something else. Most of the rings don't look right either. Also really bad spacing in CONGRESS on the reverse. Also We Are One is very poorly aligned. The A and N at the end of American should be directly over the W in WE. The names of the colonies in the rings are also messed up with some in the wrong locations. I don't think I'd send it in now. Sorry.
I agree. On your coin there is no seperation between American and Congress on the reverse. and on the obverse, the 1776 seems too fat. And I dont know how Vess can read the colonies, but he's probably right.
