I did not expect to purchase anything for my collection at the FUN show as I was mainly there to show for Ebay inventory which I was able to do very well. As many of you know...when you get bitten by the bug and a coin calls to you sometimes the pull is just to great to resist. That was the case with each of these pieces and in the end I am very happy I listened to my heart and not my head as they will fit very well in my collection Coin #1 Coin #2
Very nice strikes on both. I know good strikes are the rule for S minted Morgans, but it is something I always look at. I really like the 1881 though. If you ever decide to sell it, let me know.
oh my.....!! Auction or from a table? Curiosity is killing me. I half follow toner threads and see these going for crazy money. How crazy did you get for these? if you don't mind me asking. thanks!
The 78-S is really nice, Shane. Also looks under graded, for what that matters. Glad you had a good show -- one of these years I will make it to FUN.
I picked both up from dealers tables and yes I paid strong to get them but not as strong as in years past and I was actually offered more than I paid for the 81-S from a dealer at the show so I could have flipped it for a profit within hours but I wanted it for my set
I likewise, am partial to #2. You say "I wanted it for my set". Just what constitutes "your set"? I realize you are after toned coins, but any toned Morgans? One each date Morgan? Or just any toned coin you like?
I hadn't thought about it but it doesn't really look like bag toning as there's not toning shadow common with those but that doesn't mean it couldn't be. I suppose it could be some form of envelope toning but it also has the crustiness of album toning. I believe it could be a twofer....which means it acquired the toning from two different sources like maybe it spent some time in and envelope before being transfered to an album etc but it certainly not one that easily fits into one category. Once the TCCS is back up in about a month maybe I will post it and get some opinions from other toned Morgan collectors
