Went to Barnes and Nobel on lunch and picked up Coins: Questions and Answers Pretty easy read, lots of interesting facts on the history of US Coins.... and A 1st Edition Commemorative Re-Issue Redbook: A Guide Book of US Coins 1947 Its supposedly a exact reproduction; word for word, every page, photograph and coin value (for 1947 and before) just like the orignal... The Red Cover is even fadded like its really old... Its pretty cool to try and get into the early collecter mindset and especially to compare the values of a given coin then vs todays 2007 book values... Both Whitman Titles, Nothing elite, but both good fun reads....
I ordered the 1947 tribute edition and the 1947 tribute leather cover edition from Whitman when they first became available. You're right, looking through those books kind of takes you back to what it must have been like to scrape up $15.00 to buy that elusive uncirculated 90-s vdb or take out a second mortgage to get that $35 dollar proof 1895 Morgan you've always wanted. Its truly amazing looking through the pages and just wondering.....if I only had a time machine and a few thousand dollars.
Indianhead: Congratulations on a couple of good buys. The Leather edition is sold out and is already up in value. Now, to continue your guide book collection.
anyone pickup that new book on buffalo and jefferson nickels that came out last month by whitman???? i was thinking about picking it up soon.
good for you. the study of coins is half the fun of collecting. that is a great purchase...it is so interesting to see the info and prices from earlier reference and catalogue material.
Thanks Treashunt. Ive been following the values on these particular editions. The regular 1947 Tribute edition is still available from Whitman but I believe they will go up also after they're sold out. Im glad I ordered the Leather edition also, I havent even opened that one.
Indian Head: The leather edition is very nice, what number did you get? (Limited to #500 pieces). I am still searching for more pieces.
I just picked up a new book... Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide---I've heard good things about it and can't wait to read it. Best of all its signed! Speedy

David Bowers) The Histroy of the United States Mint and its Coinage (HardBack) and for fun, Not really a book, but in the book section I picked up "Westward Series Collector's Map" (By Whitman) On the top section, It kinda has a road map across the US, telling about each coin and some histrical facts. Has spots for (P & D) Ocean in a View (P & D) American BisonN (P & D) Keelboat (P & D) Peace Medal Then Obverses for 2004, 2005, 2006 then (P & D) Reverse- Return to Moneticello Along the bottom, its got a timeline holes for 2005 Oregon Quarter, 2005 California Quarter, 2000 Sacagawea Dollar Obverse and Reverse Orignal Buffalo Nikel, 2005 Kansas Quarter, 2003 Missouri Quarter Not really that special, but I thought it would be fun filling the holes from my change...
