So today I went to two different coin shops, and bought mercury dimes (19) and 40% halves(3) of the halves was a nicely toned 1965, a 1976-S unc at $4 each. and a 1968 BU. Of the dimes were mostly early mercs. found 2 1916 dimes one 'S' and a suspect AG 'D' might have to send it in to get attributed. some 1917-1920 P,D,S and a couple XF-AU mercs. Pics up tomorrow. My dad picked up a nice 3 cent nickel and a 1976-S Unc. Eisenhower dollar 40% for $8. Great deal. He also got a nicer barber dime. I was surprised at how many Mercury dimes were avaliable today, for less than 10 were available to look at last time. Pics up tomorrow. ~Cannyn
It is really worn, but I see that lump in the wear, don't know if it is uneven wear, or a mintmark. Not too sure.
The coin is an authentic Mercury Dime... ... I can't understand how anyone would feel comfortable paying anything near '16-D money for a coin like. What makes you certain that coin is a '16-D and not a far-less-scarce '16-S? Because the dealer who sold the coin to you said so? ...Well, hate to break it to ya, but not everyone's as honest as you may take 'em to be... The coin is worth no more than its weight in Silver, IMO. -Brian
Man, it sure looks like wear, etc. and an mintmark at the same time. Here's a photo for comparison purposes: http://www.coinfacts.com/dimes/mercury_dimes/1916d_dime_rev_pcgs66fb.jpg
Nothing of the sort, just looking through the bargain bin, snatched it up, the dealer didn't tell me it was a '16-D' just my thought. I am not certain it is a 'D' but would like to know your opinions before I go send it in thinking it is and getting severely disappointed. Payed nowhere near '16-D' money, just the $2.25 melt.
Did a little extra research (30min) and decided it is just a cull of a 1916, I was looking in the waaaay wrong place for a MM and got excited. Thanks for the insight. ~Cannyn
Nice to pick up mercs at 2.25 none the less. Could be a low grade example of a 16-D. If one would be over looked, it would be that one. I've seen some sorry examples of 1942 D's
Getting a 16D today is really chancy. I mean that has been one of the most collected coins and most highly counterfeited. The fact that this one is so worn as to not be able to see the mint mark, makes me feel it might be an S, if anything. I lean that way, because the Ds got pulled from circulation starting early. What I am saying is that I doubt a D would have been passed through so many hands to get that amount of wear. somebody would have pulled a D, while it was still recognizable as such, I think. I hope it is, but am inclined to feel it isn't. Good luck with it.
