I have $1500 to spend on something new. Looking for something appealing that is not likely to decline in value. Currently thinking about a Library of Congress commem, but so far have only ruled out non-US coins. Ideas?

Platinum bars, buy in the next week or so. It's goin up, up, up!!! $1500 will buy you about 2oz... but 5 years ago it would have been 4oz!!!

This idea may be quickly shot down by others on this board but...how about an XF or AU 1909-S VDB? The 100 year anniversary is coming up in a few years and I am already hearing talk of them changing the design of the Lincoln Memorial cent. When the state quarters came out the older Washington quarters went up, and I think older Jefferson nickels are being collected more since the new designs came out. I would wager the same thing will happen with the Lincoln cent, especially since it is one of the most popular collector series.

Anyway, my local coin dealer is at a big coin show in California this weekend and I have asked him to look for a nice example for me for this reason.

Just my 2 cents worth. :D

    or a better split.

I think the big thing is to buy something you like---

I don't like to say what to buy because the market changes all the time...I might say to buy a 1909-S VDB and latter this year (or maybe sooner) the S VDB will fall in value and then I would be my fault that you got one...

So I would say look at some coins...you might want to buy 1 coin or you might want to buy 1500...its up too you.

I would buy something you like, but if you are going to buy 1 or a few high dollar coins get the coins certified slabbed.

    If I had $1500.00 to spend I would add a 1939 Double Monticello Nickel to my collection and a 1942 d/Horizantal D

    And theres the $1500.00

    Just my .05

I have been leaning towards the 1909 S VDB . I found an MS63 BN that sold for 1650 in an NGC holder. This was in Jan. Also thinking about a 32 S or D quarter. I think I could get an uncirculated example 1250-1500.

    Either one are excellent choices.[IMG]
You could do far worse and I believe these will come as close to fulfilling your requirements as any others. Good Luck!

Rather fond of old gold! Twenty dollar St. Gaudens or Liberty would suit me fine and with a little luck you could pick up one of each and a $10 gold Indian or a few $5 gold pieces. Bottom line is they don't make them any more and of course another 3 legged buffalo nickel does sound good as well! Good luck and enjoy the hunt!

For that sort of money, you could probably get one $20 gold liberty MS64, or two $20 saints MS64.

    Welcome to the forum ejkcoin.
    May I ask why?

I've seen more increase in the world coin market in the past year than in the previous several. Your $1,500 can buy a lot of world gold, or a whole lot of world silver; all of which stands as good or better a chance of appreciation over the next several years as any U.S. material. ;)

Hey Roy, don't be dragging any more U.S. collectors into the world market! It is growing so fast I can't hardly get what I want now! Everyone in the U.S. should concentrate on dead Presidents until I get all the great world coins relocated to Indiana! Then everyone else can have whats left! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me as I was just a little slow getting started and the competition is killing me and driving prices! Only wish I had started years and years ago but...?

    Buy BISONS.

Probably the best return on your investment, IMO!!!!!!!!!

You could have bought (5) (BISON) coin and medal sets last week and they would be worth 3 times that now, I Did!

I bought another Bison for 5 cents and sold it for 30 dollars, do the math on that percentage gain!!!!!

If I had an extra $1500 to spend right now, it would definitely be a nice 1916-D Mercury Dime.

BEAUTIFUL coin, LOW mintage, GREAT investment potential and, most importantly: BRAGGING RIGHTS! :p

Rather than even try to pick out something - I'd suggest that you go with the basic idea you already have - buy a key. Whatever series you like the most - buy the key. You might even be able ot get two in some cases.

I am curious now, Roy, where should I look first on world coins? A link would be great if there is something on the web.

I have to admit to admiring the 1916D Mercury, but I recently saw a improperly cleaned example in an NCS holder go for $1100!. My budget will only buy something less that nice :(
