I think Cointalk could easily make a photography "Basics" Category on coin photography. I believe there would ba allot of interest.
It's coin talk, not photography talk. Granted, many questions arise regarding photography in these forums, and most, if not all, are answered quite admirably by local experts and novices alike. I don't think we need another section to fragment the focus of what goes on here..........just a minor humble opinion.
I know, it is a coin the forum, but it is interpreted by the photos of coins. Without visualization the wonderful information is just an image in some ones imagination. People also like photography. It's called marketing and attracts another genre. I think it would be more beneficial to integrate some examples of good illustrations and "how to" in the "Welcome to Cointalk" bla bla bla rules. So many photos are atrocious and there are many members that can help.
No offense intended, but some of us have been waiting for a forum for "Tokens and Medals" for about 11 years, and there are others that have been waiting quite a while for some other forum topics. Granted, a forum on photography would be beneficial for some of the newcomers to CT, but a lot of them are "one and done" and rarely heard from again.
Photography-specific sub-forums on other forum sites don't tend to have a lot of traffic. They start out strong, then fizzle. I've seen that happen on two forums, and I doubt it would be much different here. Better for everyone to have the photography questions and such posted in a "general" forum for all to see and comment on.
Just a thought Joe.........there is a thread in the 'general' section that deals with the posting of non-coin photography, and it is one that is quite popular. Perhaps (maybe) think about posting a coin help photography thread over there?
There is the coin photo as art kind of photos as posted above, or the coin as it looks in hand to grade schools of coin photography. Then a little of both. Possibilities but I dont know about a dedicated thread as it would probably fizzle unless there was a champion to move it forward when it stalls. And some professionals will only go so far to give tips as there are people who make a part of thier living photographing coins.
There are already many threads on coin photography, if you search 'em up. Now if you meant a category rather than a thread, that's a different story. I believe the admins are perfectly happy with the categories as they are. Exonumia (tokens & medals) would be a good one. So would a Metal Detecting subforum. But I don't think anything like that is gonna happen anytime soon.
@bruthajoe read through this, impressive, controversial and thought stimulating https://www.cointalk.com/threads/advanced-coin-photography.362765/
Yea, I was offering a more simple "in your face", "before you post" approach with some basic tips. Especially for cell phone photography. Isn't it annoying having people post photos like this all day long?....
Yes, this is an excellent thread. I actually contributed on pg5. Some of the files on those pages are massive and slow my browser. High end photos there. I was referring to a simple intro for beginners though but yes, there is great photo info everywhere.
Agreed. I have been using my digital camera less just lately. The new smartphones are just incredible. In the camera settings are adjustment sliders for ISO, white balance etc. I have found 3 low wattage lamps to be absolutely sufficient. 2 high up at 10 and 2, and 1 almost at coin level at 6. Try not to use the screen magnifier but rather raise the coin to fill the viewing screen, reduces the danger of pixellation. Plus I like to sometimes be arty though not for general viewing on the forum. A simple piece of orange foil was placed between the lights and the subject to enhance the sunrise/sunset theme on this coin although I will re-do it in the future with the new phone
