So the wife and I are traveling to Baltimore in mid October for a wedding and immediately heading up to Brooklyn afterwards to visit her sister for a couple days. It just so happens that I will be passing pretty much right through Philadelphia and would like to do a Tour and check out the 'cabinet'. My question to the forum is how long does the tour typically take and is there anything else nearby that I just can't miss the opportunity to visit? Thanks!
The Philadelphia Mint is right next to the Liberty Bell display located in the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park.
Possibly. I know that the Denver Mint doesn't have anything along those lines but I've never been to the Philadelphia Mint. Each of the mints used to operate their own store where mint, proof, and souvenir sets could be purchased but that concept got traded to an outside vendor which has a shop on US Mint grounds but is not a part of the Treasury Department. It's the Souvenir Shop.
It is a self guided tour in Philly, so you take as long as you like. Out of Denver and Philly, we preferred the guided tour in Denver but trying to book that was a nightmare. As someone else has said, no cameras or phones so no photos inside. The gift shop (I thought) was better in Philly.
The Philadelphia mint tour is self guided and the gift shop is nice. They have a few exhibits on the first mint as well as on contemporary minting. I would allow at least 90 minutes to see everything. Also a couple minutes from the mint by foot is the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. They have a wonderful exhibit called Money in Motion. https://www.philadelphiafed.org/education/money-in-motion/ It's also self guided and pretty quick, but I would allow at least 30 minutes to see this exhibit. They will also give you a free bag of shredded currency.
I think he's referring to the Mint Cabinet which is housed in the Smithsonian, right? edit - excuse me, National Numismatic Collection I just learned... same thing and in DC
LOL Last October we attended a wedding in Philly ,the hotel we stayed in from my window I could see this grave site. Plus down the street the first post office.
I was going to take a trip there then the riots broke out. I want to go to the B&O museum, Babe Ruth's home, inner harbor as it's been years since I've been there.
All those issues were in North West Baltimore you would not had any issues where you wanted to go. My office is up in the area I just was talking about , My main office is in Philly . Well we have two plants one in Baltimore the Philly plant is in North Philly.
Also in the same area as the Liberty Bell is Independence Hall. For eats, look up the Reading Terminal Market. It's not in close proximity to the historic district, about 8 blocks or so, but worth the walk.
Yeah the Mint Cabinet, was sent off to the Smithsonian and became the National Numismatic Collection about a hundred years ago or so. I got lucky back in 76 when I visited the Philly mint, they had a great display at that time, the entire Eliasberg collection.
