    Hi Everyone,
I just got a note in the email saying that there was a transaction gone bad here at CoinTalk. I'm not going to out either of the two parties, they can out themselves if they want to, but the long and short of it is that by paying with a USPS Money Order, the buyer, to my knowledge, has no recourse other than the good will of the seller and reporting it to the Postal Inspector Service.

Now, I can't stop y'all from doing this, but for the sake of all things good, just don't use Money Orders of any flavor when you're buying online. Don't use checks. Don't use cash. Don't use anything but your credit card. When you use your credit card, if things go wrong, you can get your credit card bank to help you out.

    Just, MHO....

Always good advice of course. Even if the seller charges you more to accept CC or Paypal, it is a cheap form of insurance I have unfortunately use a few times.

    Peter,

We're slowly running out of people we can trust.

Geez, before you know it, some of you married people will be waking in the morning and asking the person next to you in the bed for their ID.

On the bright side I just completed a small transaction with another member. I was the seller and he the buyer.

No credit cards involved as I refuse to do Paypal but it went just fine.

Isn't there a way to make a sticky thread for positive transactions, kind of like an eBay feedback?

I have bought things from fretboard, rgjohn, mccarney imrich, and possibly others, no problems to speak of, I used usps money orders, but I did peruse a bunch of their posts first to see if they seemed to be people of integrity.

Also I did not spend so much that it would pinch very hard if for whatever reason the items were not sent. Like the old saying goes, if you cry over a nickle you will die over a dime.

Heck, there are some people I would not worry sending cash in the mail to buy something.

    Sampson ripped me off, fwiw.

I'll be making a trip up to Cooperstown next summer to check out the baseball HOF and I'll be dropping by his house to collect on the $70 he owes me, since it's on the way.

I have "experience" in collecting debts. ;)

Sorry to hear that scammers have shown their faces here. I have bought and sold on the classifieds here and had good experiences so far. I have used paypal each time. I am always a bit leery of the paypal gift as well. seems to me that paypal would have a hard time helping retrieve your money when you deliberately skirted their fees. just something else to worry about I guess.

I think common sense comes into play the most here.

It's a shame that there was a bad transaction, but that happens online. There are bad people who do this kind of thing. Things like this have happened on CoinTalk once before, and various times on Collectors Universe, and of course, this isn't limited to just coins.

If the member is new, and the deal seems sketchy don't take the bait. Even if the member is an older member, and the deal seems a tad off, don't do it. I was just offered a fantastic deal, that I passed up. The guy seemed so nice, but what do I say when all my money is gone, and somebody else is running off as "me" ?

Common sense people. If you aren't protected. Don't do it.

I once sold something on the bay and the person wanted to pay by postal money order. I told him OK, but I wouldn't send it to him until after it cleared. I waited 5 days after I deposted into my bank account just to be sure......I'm sorry to here that one went wrong here....

You also have the option of taking a USPS Money Order to your local PO branch and cashing it there. No waiting! The only thing you must bear in mind is that it is best to go later in the afternoon since they start with a very limited cash drawer.

OT: Darn it! This confounding protocol logged me out again, and I lost this post and had to re-type it. Peter, I hope this latest round of updates will correct this!

I just want to add one thing. I have used money orders and cashier's checks with great success with large reputable dealers (like APMEX). A large business doesn't want to be the target of an investigation and it's harder for them to just run off.

And I'll add one thing. Any of the CT'ers here that I've dealt with, transaction wise, have always been up and up and most stellar indeed. It is indeed a "blight" to read that one of our own has transacted in the negative.
