Yes they do, and they shouldn't. (Would be interesting to know when they started doing that. I've read through a lot of mint correspondence up through the mid 20th century and they NEVER referred to them as pennies back then.)

And just because the mint uses an incorrect term that doesn't mean we should. :)

They also (in internal documents) refer to brand new coins made for circulation as "circulated coins". They (now) reserve the term "uncirculated" for coins intended to be used in sets for collectors. If you want to use US Mint terms, every MS Morgan dollar out there is "circulated".

Can they not rename it? Considering languages change based on usage, could they not have just renamed it considering practically 99% of America calls it a penny?

I don't mean to open a can of worms, but nothing is set in stone when it comes to names.

Sure, but since the LAW refers to them as Cents, in order to rename them you would have to pass new legislation doing so.

Didn't realize they were legally named like that. Looks like I learned something today.

    Yep US code Title 1 Sec 5112 (a) (6)
Denominations, specifications, and design of coins
    (6)
except as provided under subsection (c) of this section, a one-cent coin that is 0.75 inch in diameter and weighs 3.11 grams.

The subsection (c) referred to is where the Sec of Treasury is given the authority to issue the cent in copper plated zinc.

but don't they weight 2.5 grams now ??

So they changed their definition and made it retroactive to when the US started minting coins ?
