hello everyone i just found this 1987 lincoln penny it has a d mint mark before the in god and after trust there is 18 ds stamped along side the penny!!!!!!and whats worse the ds are also on the reversedown the other side!!!!look at this pic on the reverse there are ds all over the back even in the center and on the rim and one cent the c is very doubled in cent
look at reverse ds all over also one cent is doubled in a few letters and also in upper letters.how on earth could this of happened?
I can just make out what appears to be an "S" to the left of "IN" like you said, but the pics are too small for me to see anyhing else.
it is a d before in and ds all down the side it is a mint mark d they are all mint mark ds front and back
here is some bigger pics any body know how the d mint mark did this on the front then all over the reverse ?
Jess, from the looks of that reverse, I'd say that coins been run over by a truck. Any way you can post some larger pics?
i asure you it was not run over by a truck lol it is ds all over the back the are not indented the are raised d mint marks they all measure the same size as a normal mint from that year and a pic is coming soon
Jesse, I can't see the image that well to comment on the letters, but if you say they are raised and the same font and size of the mintmark, check the edge of the coin where the letters appear. If someone is practicing reverse engraving, by drilling a small hole in the edge and then using a tool to raise a mintmark from forcing on the inside of the coin metal ( was never as popular as gluing mint marks on), but if they were expert, a lot harder to detect. It just came to me that practicing on zinc lincolns would be a lot easier than solid bronze lincolns. The hole would be closed, but might be visible if there. Interesting idea for forgers. And that would account for them being close to the edge. Jim
