I found this penny years ago in my pocket change, however only recently have I rediscovered it. A few times I'd encountered pennies which had the inner zinc dissolved leaving behind its copper shell (used to clean out vacuums at a carwash), however given how easily Zinc can react to harsh environments, I wanted to know if this looked more like a mint error or something done after leaving the mint. In case it isn't clear, it is a 1988 D penny. The finish is very rough.
It looks as though it was stripped of it's copper layer. It has no mint luster what-so-ever. Also the rough surface indicates to me that some chemical was used to strip the copper away.
