Need help with this penny. Weight is 2.7 g. Size is same as a dime. Very weak lettering and profile. Opinion is greatly appreciated
Well, it's badly damaged, probably in multiple ways. The smaller diameter, high rims, and fringe around the circumference indicate that it was trapped in a dryer or pounded on the edge. The surfaces look like they've been damaged by heat and/or acid; the low weight suggests corrosion. It's a little hard to say what actually happened to it, but I hope whoever did it got rid of their frustrations. There isn't any way any of this could have happened during the minting process, so it's not a "mint error", and not collectable (except as a curiosity). Welcome to CoinTalk!
I'll just throw this out here until a real answer comes along. Spooned and treated with acid, but I really don't know. Edit-just crossed over you jeff.
That is definitely a dryer coin. Second example shown today.. @Hamhocksleep77 Not a mint error of any kind. Just damaged.
