I'M ABSOLUTELY NOT A COLLECTOR SO MY QUEERY IS BASIC IN NATURE: I HAVE A 2009 D PENNY AND A 2009 (NO MINT) PENNY BOTH WITH THE SAME IMAGE ON THE OBVERSE (LINCOLN & THE CAPITOL) WAS THAT INTENDED OR IS IT UNUSUAL?
Hi and welcome to CT. What you are describing sounds like a die clash. In focus photo and full size (not thumbnail) is needed otherwise we are just assuming.
Welcome to CT! In 2009, the mint issued special designs to commemorate Lincoln's 200th birthday. Perhaps you are thinking of the 3rd one, which show Lincoln in front of the Illinois Statehouse? These are actually the reverse of the coin .
There is a design with the Capitol at Springfield (Complete, Professional life) and one with the incomplete US Capitol (DC, Presidency).
The design was intended but it could also be a die clash. Only photos will tell us do we can tell you. Full frame on both sides.
No mint mark means it was minted at the main mint in Philadelphia. The D stands for the Denver mint. Both should look the same except for the mint marks.
If the Lincoln/Capitol is indented on the obverse, it is probably a vise job where someone sandwiched a reverse and an obverse together and squeezed them in a vise. Can you share pictures (Welcome to CT)
