Hi again, Looking to buy my first guide books, especially for checking pennies, and have looked over many and read reviews on Amazon. I thus far have gathered that these two would be good to get: Cherrypickers' Guide http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0794822851/ 2012 Guide Book of United States Coins: Red Book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0794833497/ What do you think? Would these two suffice for checking pennies for errors, valuable dates, etc.? What do you use? Thank you, Eva
Both books you mentioned are really good. The Red book is a must, because you use it to go through and start knowing about the coins. The Cherrypicker's guide is great because it give you pictures and descriptions of some of the major errors, and it gives a good starting point to know what to look for, and it also (Vol 1) also includes nickels.... But the other one is really good if your goal is to know your pennies (cents). And don't forget to start looking at web sites. There is some really valuable information out there on the internet.
I would recommend "Looking Through Lincoln Cents" by Charles Daughtrey. The book is also updated constantly online at his website: http://www.coppercoins.com/ If you don't find it there, then it doesn't exist. Guy
I have both the CPG and the ARLC and use each several times a week, but one source that is just as valuable and of less cost is Crawford's Detailed Analysis of Lincoln Cent varieties, now on CD for $30. It contains some varieties that the other two do not.The designation of the varieties may be a little confusing at first, but easily resolved. http://www.dvnmagazine.com/dalcvoncd.html Jim
