Penny 1974-S no metal

    hi, on a 1974-S penny missing the zero relief metal on the letters "oF" in the back of the coin! Can it be considered a mint mistake? there are other findings of this kind. be a common mistake? thank you

    Yes..
    Very common.. Seen on many Cents!

    Metal is not added to a coin when it is being minted. It is being formed by the Die striking the blank planchet.

    The 'o' of oF is weak because it is
    opposite the Bust of Lincoln - when
    struck, the metal flows into the larger
    Bust area of the die, making the design
    opposite it a bit weaker.

    This is a VERY common effect on Memorial
    Rev. Cents......not considered an error coin.

    .....but good eyes....

    .. and when they went to a lower relief strike, that effect lessened immensely.

    because for the Americans mistakes are double die! and rotations over 45 °?!?!? in Italian coinage this is a serious mistake of the coin and is considered an uncommon error
