Thought it would be cool to have threads devoted to each coin. This allows people that don't collect that particular coin to know which ones they might want to hold onto. So, let's start with pennies. Pennies aren't my favorite, but I hang onto anything 1959 or lower I find.
I have given this alot of thought, When it comes to saving Cents, I save anything 1958 and below, I also save all Memorials that are pre 1983. If the memorials do start to increase in value, I think this will be the dividing line for values- kinda like the 1939 and below wheat cents. This is mainly because in 1983 the composition of the coin was changed. Right now, the ratio of pre 1982 to post 82 cents in a roll (at least where I live) is an average of 17 pre/ 33 post. I have a habbit of counting them per roll.
I just went through a bunch of pennies and have them all sorted by year, so maybe I'll just make some rolls for each up to 1983. Also, maybe hold onto some 2009 and 2010s.
I'd keep good examples of the 4 2009 bicentennial cents I'd keep any wheatback Some keep the copper cents (pre 1982 and some of 1982) Then, you have a whole subset of errors and the like. Too long to list here.
Looks like fun~ Looks like fun for a thread. I empty my cents into a container just by liking their general glance appeal and heft. Spend the rest. If things get slow I sort those again into pre/post 1982. A simple fast sort is then the wheats have a separate slotted can I poke them into until I feel like giving them a closer look. I guess someday I'll roll up some "searched" rolls for feeBay of the copper.
1960 1970 1972 1983 1984 1992 1995 1999 2000 Then later I will check for doubled-die, strike differences, or small date depending on the year.
I saved wheat Lincolns from 1957 to 2008, then stopped. Figued it was enough. I take a mixed roll with me when I go to coin shows and look for a YN just starting out, and with their parents permission give them away. I get a lot more value that way than selling them. Besides it's just fun.
I keep anyhting made before 1959 and then I keep a few Memorials if they have good grade or are toned and then the 2009 Pennies.
Remember though they are not "pennies" but cents. Remember though they are not "pennies" but cents. We do not have "pennies" in the USA.
Any high grade cent, good exaples of toning, WAM's, DD's, 2009's are rather easily found now, all wheaties, all steelies, any errors, or anything that makes my coin alarm go off in my head...
Yes they are. yes we do. You don't see anyone complaining about calling Five Cent pieces "nickels" do you? Jeez!
Cool, thank you for the link! I'm just getting back into coin collecting, I was in to it for a couple years when I was a kid. Good to know what to look for when I'm going through rolls. Found a silver nickel and a few wheats so far, nothing really cool but I'm hoping some banks will help me out and save some halves for me.
