I might have asked this before but I can't remember so I need a refresher. Does anyone know why the Peace Medal nickel is going for more than the Keelboat nickel in auctions and at the dealers? The Mint rolls of Peace Medal nickels really seems high compared to the other for some reason. Some enlightenment please.....
If I were to venture a guess, I would think maybe simply because the Peace nickel is older and thus less available? This being the first major design change in quite some time could have caused people to hoard them...think 'State Quarter Syndrome' If that is the case maybe we'd see the prices eventually even out. I'd like to see the mintage numbers for them to compare also. I'm sure someone will be able to dig up that info to post...I'd be interested to see the comparison.
You did ask about this at the end of December, but I was the only one who responded. Here is my response from that thread: It may be an availability issue. I did notice that when the Keelboat was issued, collectors seemed to prefer that design and I think the Peace nickel was ignored for that reason. Now that the Keelboat nickels are in collections, I think collectors are starting to think about the Peace nickels which has made the demand for the Peace nickels greater now. JMHO.
