--Designed by Anthony De Francisci, the Peace Dollar depicts a profile of Miss Liberty with a crown of rays on the obverse, while the reverse of the coin has the image of a majestic American Eagle perched on a rock and clutching the laurel wreath of Peace in its talons. The design of the coin reflects the Art Deco movement of the time. For example, as is common in many Art Deco creations, the inscription on the coin uses some Latin alphabet. Accordingly the word "Trust" in the coin's legend is spelled as the Latin word TRVST.-- Bone
Just Google , Just Google, but I do seem to recall that question coming up a time or two in my distant memory. B
HMMMM. Isn't V the roman method for saying 5? Still can't figure out what this has to do with Nickels except V = 5 in Roman and 5 is a Nickel.
I fond this on pcgs site...The Peace Dollar was first struck in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I. The designer used the "V" instead of a "U" to stand for, "Victory. " It was originally thought that Peace Dollars would be issued only in 1921 and for that reason Morgans were also minted that year. The new design proved very popular however, so it was modified and made a standard issue coin until 1935.
Yeah it is, but it was also the way U was written in Latin. Look at the pic below. See the arrow, it's pointing to a V. The Latin word is KAROLVS - it stands for Carlos in Spanish, Charles in English. But it is pronounced as KAROLUS - the V is just how they wrote the letter U. And did for centuries as evidenced by the coin. It was struck around 1550.
Don't believe everything you read Jimmy. The '21 Morgans were struck long before the first Peace dollar was ever struck. And it was done because the mint had to comply with the current law that stated silver dollars had to be struck to replace all those melted down in 1918. And they didn't yet have the design for the Peace dollar completed. The first Peace dollars weren't struck until late December 1921 when they had already finshed making all the Morgans. As for the V for victory part - you'll find far more referrences that state is was because it was supposed to be a classic design with Latin spelling.
People have listed them on Ebay saying it was an error. Some go for normal prices, others a bit higher.
The V for U thing is used in the inscriptions on almost all of the older government buildings here in Washington,D.C.It was meant to compliment the Roman style architecture.
so all of those dollars have a "V"? because mine had it and I almost had a heart attack I thought maybe it was worth alot of money.
