Got this Peace Dollar as a Christmas gift for myself. I'm bullish on the grade, but am looking for other opinions. Thoughts?
yeah, these pictures aren't very good. the reverse has a heck of a lot more detail than is shown here. any suggestions for taking a better photo?
I agree that better pics are needed...especially with this coin. The 1921 Peace Dollar is prone to weak strikes and is thus more challenging to grade.
I would say XF-45, but hard to tell by the pics. Peace dollars are hard to grade anyway because of the weak srikes. Looks like a nice coin!
Nice looking coin, but impossible to grade using the pictures you provided. Does the eagle have full breast feathers? Is their any wear in Liberty's hair?
I didn't see any wear on the coin anywhere. I was thinking MS-62. It's got a full share of bag marks. Biggest concern is a large mark at 3 o'clock near the rim on the reverse. My dad thought it was a die defect rather than a nick.
I want to know what this is (see pic below). It's enough to make me question authenticity. And, the coin, if it is genuine, looks to have been polished.
Hardest coin series to grade bar none but, Hardest coin series to grade bar none but, it looks polished to me also. There is a little known trick using baking soda that if done correctly can fool many even TPG's. I have seen a person taking a modern silver eagle with milk spots and make them vanish and be impossible (almost) to ever tell - that's what this coin looks like from photos. So grade IMO is AU-50 cleaned.
Spent some time with the coin under 10x magnification. detail is very sharp with the exception of the hair dropping down by the ear. unclear whether it's wear or a weak strike. detail on the reverse is all quite sharp. I think it's at least a high AU. I do question a little whether it's been cleaned. some of the "wet" look in the photo is reflection off the 2x2 plastic, and the color appears mostly natural. Given the difference in value between an MS and AU, I think I need to send this puppy in for grading. Could be a while, but I'll make sure to report back when the time comes.
I am having a hard time wanting to call it more than AU. The obverse has an above average strike for the date. I see some weakness in the strike on the eagle on the reverse, but the obverse is struck so much better than the obverse I have to think that it is wear. I to think that the coin looks polished, however lighting and photo angle can add to making it look polished. Hard to tell on this coin without it in hand, but am agreeing Au polished.
I have my doubts that anyone has a way to remove the milk spots on ASE's but if there is a way I'd like to see it. Last I heard, PCGS was offering a reward to anyone who has a way to do it. As far as I know, the reward has never been claimed.
Haven't looked at Peace Dollars for awhile, but, if the coin looks like the pics (enlarged), here's my two cents. Since there is no toning, yet has great luster, I'd say it's been dipped recently, but correctly. Since the luster is also on the slightly flat hair lines and eagles wing and there appears to be no flat areas other than those, both of which are in the center of the coin, I'd say it's a weak strike rather wear. Nice coin, I like it.
It looks like a genuine AU58 to me. And I am guessing that the coin hasn't been cleaned, but that the lighting/imaging merely made it look that way.
I agree. Many of my early photos had exactly that appearance. The coin will be much easier to photograph once it is taken out of the 2x2.
Looks AU-55 and possibly cleaned I see some scratches on the obverse in the hair area that make me think it could have been but not certain.
I can go along with the pics maybe making it look like it may have been polished. But what is "that" that I circled in the pic Mark ? It's obviously raised, it's definitely not supposed to be there, and I honestly can't think of a thing that could have caused it. As I said, it's enough to make me suspicious. Not convinced, just suspicious.
There isnt from what i have been told by a local dealer. As a matter of fact he tried to dip a 1989/90 eagle right in front of me to see if it was possible (btw he wouldnt have sold it to me and said he wasnt going to sell it.) From what he knows he told me the tint came from something in the metal when the mint casted the coin.
