My Peace Dollar circulation collection is now complete (until I upgrade, of course ). I saved the really painful one for last.

Ye cats! That is the painful one -- if, of course, you're willing to forgo the proofs.

I "won" a batch of Peace dollars a couple of years ago on eBay, paying well over the going rate for generics, because I saw a 1921 and a 1934 in the (dark) photos that looked promising. I ended up submitting those two to ANACS. The 1921 came back 62, and the 1934 AU50. I wish they'd been the other way around, of course, but they just about covered the cost of the entire lot. That was my introduction to the, um, steep value curve that the 34-S takes in XF and above...

 

Saving the biggest one for last flies in the face of the occasional "buy the keys first" advice I hear, but I see a couple advantages in waiting. First, you make fewer mistakes as you progress through a set. Buying the key date last, you're much less likely to make a really costly mistake. The other advantage is that it's a much more exhilarating way to cap off a set then, say, finally buying that 1922 in MS65.

Yeah, kinda crazy. After I went through all the work (and expense) of collecting the entire set except the 34S, I needed to go "all in".

And the wife continues to ask: You paid WHAT for a dollar?

 

For me, I'm glad I waited. Learned a lot in buying the others.

Well I'm officially jealous. I've been looking for one in 63 for over a year now. I can find 64's or 58's. If you not mind me asking where did you finally find one?
