PCI started out good but it was sold and its grading standards went down. Here is a survey of the different grading services quality PNG/ICTA Survey

My morgan is graded 1 with the new thing, 1 with the old holder

And I got 1 morgan graded by ANA, which I know is trustable

Why doesn't the survey do ANA?

The ANA doesn't do grading any more. I'm not much into TPGs, but I believe that ANACS is the successor to the ANA's grading service.

The ANA sold ANACS to Amos Press(Publisher of Coin World) in 1990 and earlier this year Amos Press sold it to Anderson press(parent company to Whitman Publishing).

PCI is good for finding fake and such...so many people like them because if they have a question of weather their coin is fake or not they can send it to PCI...

But the fact still stand that PCI is known to overgrade coins...so I would never suggest sending coins to PCI for grading.

So my only suggest is...than when buying a PCI graded coin you make sure you agree with the grade...

Even if you didn't send them in it is still important to know how to grade coins so you don't buy a overgraded coin...

You can get good books on coin grading off of ebay. Some good ones are Photograde, ANA grading guide, and The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection.

Just remember that the prices in the Red Book mean nothing...some of the prices are low...and some of them are high...so if you want a good price guide...use Online Auctions....

But other than that....the Red Book is a great book to help learn about coins.

Does Numistrust Corporation [NTC] fall into the same category as PCI? I see a lot of their slabs around but never purchased one and never heard much about them, positive or negative.

No they don't. PCI is a second tier TPG, and NTC is somewhere below that. Maybe not as bad as SGS, but not in the same category as PCI (Which isn't in the same category as ANACS, NGC, PCGS, and ICG).

I have seen a few NTC slabs....and they were alright but they didn't list cleaning... IMO

the coin world puplication has had the coin trend magazine with the grading from G to 70 on a different coin each month. do you think they are accurate? i reduce them on the scanner and then upload them on my PDA and have my own available grade system with me when buying.

I like Coin World's monthly "coin grading of the month". It is a good tool and I would deem their definitions, pictures, and grades of these coins to be right on.

As for PCI, they are good for authentication and that is pretty much it. For MS and Proof grades, you almost have to deduct 3 to 4 points and for circulated coins, I am automatically deducting 5 to 20 points. For instance, their version of EF40 may grade out around VF20 to 30.

The only thing I like is that they put mintage numbers on their slabs, but that is all.

As for NTC...I put them in a class BELOW PCI. I don't trust this outfit out of Boca Raton, FL as many of their MS Lincolns appear to be dipped or "reconditioned". I stay away from them on all accounts. Here's a sample of their work:

I know that you grade coins by the side that is the lowest but I have yet to see the back of this slab or coin...nobody ever shows it...its always the front...wonder why?!

The coins I have seen from NTC have been better graded than that...they were lower grade coins like XF and such and they were still a few marks off but nothing like this...also they were priced right...
