As I'm almost caught up on my Annual Silver Proof Set collection, I've started thinking about starting a collection of PCGS Slabbed War Nickels of at least MS65 quality. From what you guys have seen, what can I expect to pay for such a set? I would like a baseline price to shoot for and budget against so that I know what is too much. Since this is a set that I genuinely want to collect and keep I want as much information going into this process as possible so that I don't get caught up and overspend. Also, do you guys feel that MS65 is too low? Thanks for your help!

    dsmith23 Gotta get 'em all

look at some completed auctions on ebay, teletrade, heritage, etc... you should get some fair prices on what it will cost you, and as for is 65 to low, collect what you like, if you think 65 is a good grade to shoot for than go for it.

I commend you on your choice to go for war nickels!
The war series are generally very well struck, have dripping luster and can be found at great prices in all high grades.
So, is MS 65 to low? That is completely up to you and your budget.
MS 65 example can be had for $15-$25., MS66 around $30-$60 and MS 67 around $80-$120. This is just average pricing. You can expect those to go up a little if you are going for FS examples or toning. Good luck and can't wait to see them!

Thanks for the quick replies guys. The main qualities I'm looking for are good strikes, good luster, and no problems. I am indifferent to toning. I think at the price point, MS-65 is a good jumping off point, and if down the road I decide I want to upgrade I can always use the 65 collection to put toward the upgrades.
Next question. I don't currently deal a lot in slabbed coins. If I see a really good deal on a clad, I'll pick it up (got a ms65 bicentenial in an anacs the other day for 2.50), do you guys prefer one over the other. I would be considering PCGS vs. NGC. Thanks again!

Really it's personal preference. I cannot comment on ether since I collect all raw. However, one difference between the two when it comes to Jeffs, is that NGC will designate 5 FS, 5.5FS, or 6FS. PCGS just grades FS.

If you aren't completely stuck on slabbed, you can always purchase a stunning, lustrous, complete set in the old capital plastic holders for under $150. Many of these will be MS 65.

That is the other option I was looking at. Thanks
