Just wondering, which is tighter with grades on state quarters, PCGS or NGC? Thanks for your opinion.
I'm not sure about state quarters in particular, but PCGS seems to have stricter and more consistent grading standards overall.
I'm not sure it's worth the trouble or expense for state quarters. Unless it's a major error of some kind.
I like PCGS for state quarters because they have the flags. I'm thirsty, anyone got some kool-aid.
I think that they are both fairly similar on most coins with few exceptions. Though idk why you'd have newer proof coins slabbed IMHO
Flags baby, Flags! Hey, they don't use the series & coin #'s anymore right? I could market this as a rare slab variety. Might be able to pull and extra dollar or two.
Perhaps a better question would be - why does it matter ? Or, does it matter at all ? And are you talking about Proofs, or are you talking about business strikes ? And are you talking about coins that were graded before 2004, or coins that were graded after 2004 ? And are you talking about coins that were graded before PCGS changed their policy of not assigning the 70 grade, or coins that were graded after PCGS agreed to assign the 70 grade ? I think I'd revert back to my 2nd question - does it matter at all ?
I'm not going to go into why I prefer some of my coins slabbed. That would take up too much time. I do prefer NGC slabs over PCGS slabs. I'm not looking for discussion of the merits of either or advice as to whether my preference is right or wrong. To expand on my original question, I'm wondering if early 2000's MS state quarters would upgrade if submitted to NGC in PCGS slabs.
I wasn't asking you to explain why you prefer them slabbed, nor was I trying to discuss the merits of either company, or your preference for either company. I was asking, what I consider to be, honest questions. And in order to answer your question, of which company has the tighter grades, my questions must first be answered.
My first statements came out wrong and were not aimed at you. Sorry. I have some MS state quarters in PCGS holders, but would prefer them to be in NGC holders. Actually, they might be worth a little more in NGC. They would definitely be worth more in a higher grade. I was wondering if they were sent to NGC, if there be a chance for upgrade. Too many to put pics up. Just looking for what people think might happen. They are from 1999 through 2002, and probably graded at about those times.
When you consider the expense and risk involved with no guarantees of upgrades, it may just be better to sell the PCGS slabbed coins and use the proceeds to buy NGC slabbed coins. TC
Yep, if you have to have them slabbed, buy them already slabbed - you'll save a lot. Of course, if you believe you can identify very high grade business strikes and want to slab them, it may pay off with the condition rarity collectors.
They are already slabbed by PCGS and are mostly 66's, but there are a couple of 67's. At NGC there are not many 67's and 68's are extremely rare. If my 66's get upgraded to 67, there is a big bump in value. If my 67's get upgraded to 68, there is an even bigger bump in value. I already know which ones I think might upgrade. I want to know, in general, what others think my chances would be, realistically. Has anyone else sent coins for crossover? What were the results? Is my plan worth the undertaking? Thanks.
To be honest with you your coins would have just as much chance of being downgraded as they would have of being upgraded. Or, they may cross, with crossing being the most likely outcome. Rick your asking of the question indicates that you don't know what outcome would be more likely. Therefore all you would be doing is gambling. And the outcome of most gambling is that you lose. It isn't worth the grading fees to find out.
Thanks, Doug. I appreciate your taking the time (and having the patience) to offer your help. If I do decide to take the gamble and send them, I won't ask for any grade, just cross or upgrade.
