Is PCGS now slabbing problem coins? I know that in the past PCGS would body bag any coin that it deemed as having "problems". But this ebay auction makes me think that perhaps they're changing their policy in the hope of drumming up more business. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...o=DR&its=S%2BI%2BSS&itu=ISS%2BUCI%2BSI&otn=12
Yes you are correct. PCGS will certify a coin to be genuine but not actually grade it. ANACS does it and NGC opened NCS to do it. I checked the cert # and PCGS says they slabbed it genuine because of environmental damage.
Yeah, this is a few months old after their $100 attempt at genuine grading failed. See the following thread for more info. http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t43522/
Yes, something they once said they would never do under any circumstances (put a problem coin in a PCGS slab.)
Soon they will slab empty Camel Packs, It furthers my point time and time again. The TPG companies will end up slabbing anything that will make them more money. What's next Camel packs, matchbook covers, or how about this, this is a good one - they can slab slabs - oh yes, they can design a larger plastic case to slab the slab. First you pay for the initial slabbing, them pay for CAC sticker then they can put all that into another slab (about the size of paper back book) and slab all those inside - what a wonderful original idea! Then down the line somewhere they could even make another custom plastic case to put everything in and make a special lock only you can open. You store that now 12 lbs. of plastic in a special rosewood box with the TPG companies logo on it and carry it around on a small 2-wheel dolly. Wow I can't wait to get the first one of the assembly line. Hey that's another idea we could get them to put "first extrusion virgin plastic" on it - be the first on your block to get a "first made virgin plastic case". No fillers here this is "the pure plastic"! I mean that plastic has got to be important - I mean what else matters except the very best? I can see it now, "is your plastic got it's original luster with no scratches, hits or dings"? Is it early extrusion or does it have PVC fillers? Eureka it's a whole new world of plastic!
BHP3rd- :mouth: LMAO! What's funnier is that those interested would slowly drop off as it went to those extremes..... but you know there would still be people that would buy all that to the end. lol
Let's say you have a raw coin. It has problems, but either you missed them or think it's "close enough" and should pass. PCGS disagrees; they declare it a problem coin. Which do you prefer : an outright rejection (bodybag), or slabbed certified genuine ? For me, it's the latter. Slab it. To each his own.
Suppose you have a rare coin with known problems. It's quite valuable in spite of the problem(s). Is it of any value to have it authenticated as a genuine coin ? For many people, the answer is "yes". PCGS is supplying a service which many people feel is useful.
That's so you know the CAC sticker is genuine and hasn't been tampered with. Oh I can understand why they did it, and I can agree that the submitters would rather have the genuine slab than the body bag. My only comment has to do with PCGS reversal of a position forcefully made on several occasions that this is something they would never do. And they shouldn't have. They should have created a separate organization for the genuine slabs such as NGC has NCS. They could have at least used the Collectors Universe logo instead of the PCGS logo. They have done that on some other things.
I knew it was a matter of time before they slabbed the slab...First you pay a high price to grade and authenticate your prized raw coin, a coin that you knew was genuine and ms condition. then you pay someone else to authenticate the authentication process ,just so you know your slabbed coin... is a slabbed coin.As a reward you recieve a beautiful green sticker.: ) Now, to keep all that authentification , authentic, you pay them again to house all that plastic and sticker into a larger plastic ....What a novel idea!
This also allows those with problem coins to enter them into the registry set, something they received alot of complaints about. I expect to get at least 2 "genuines" on my next submission
Absolutely. I think they have slightly tarnished their "brand image". NGC was wise to get some "perception seperation" by putting problems in a different slab with a different "company" ID. It makes a difference. Significant. Every time I'm querying websites for coins (a la Heritage), NGC is in one chunk and NCS in another. User can query (or ignore) one or the other. Clean. PCGS is all one chunk - problems and good stuff all lumped together. Unclean.
