I've been a PCGS and raw coin guy for some time, but am thinking about including NGC. Other than keeping all my coins in one set registry and that NGCs won't fit my PCGS boxes, what are some other considerations? I think I may be missing some good coins.
Anyone who does not consider all major TPGS slabs is missing out. That's what crack outs and crossovers are for. Since you obviously are comfortable with buying "raw" coins, this should not be news to you.
I agree with insider, if you are comfortable buying coins raw, then you should consider any TPG graded coins, for the right price and that you like, and get them crossed over to the slab you like, or simply crack em out to raw, or just keep a few different boxes to house your slabs from various TPGs. And I agree with you, you likely are missing out on some good coins by limiting yourself the way you are to PCGS or raw only.
I'd be careful, I heard NCG only has an old half blind crazy man in a deep dark cave to grade coins - of course ANACS and ICG only use squirrels, as everyone knows, so at least it's better than that. You're probably best off only buying PCGS slabs and raw coins. In all seriousness though, buy the coin, not the slab, and all of the big four are excellent at grading / authenticating for the most part - though some occupy certain niches better than others.
I get it. It is a hobby so you like what you like……. Some years back I wanted to put a high end seated type set together. My finest pieces that I wanted to anchor the type set with were in NGC slabs so being the anal guy that I am, I wanted NGC slabs for the rest of my seated type set. I found out rather quickly that I would have to ignore some fine PCGS and ANACS slabbed examples, so I relented and began accepting them to get my finest seated coins. One day I may crack them and send them to NGC, but I have grown comfortable with the other slabs. But in the end, it is your hobby to enjoy as you wish to enjoy it, but I would nudge you to look at coins in the slabs you have ruled out. You just might miss something good!
