PCGS MS67 or NGC MS68?

I'm debating between purchasing a set of 4 Satin Finish coins graded by PCGS and NGC. The PCGS offer is $75 graded MS67 for 1 ea 2005 P&D Bison/Western Waters Satin Finish Nickels (4 total). The NGC offer is $147 for 4 of the same graded MS68.

I know the stock advice is get what you can afford, but i'm wondering if NGC's MS68 is the same as PCGS's MS67?

    Thanks in advance, :)

Do you not have the chance to examine the coins yourself, at least through images? I'd check them out. If you think that the MS68s are in better condition and graded properly AND you have the money for them and think you would enjoy them more, buy those.

Actually no, these are ebay auction. I'm strictly going by the TPG's grading. To be honest, I couldn't tell an MS67 from a MS68 to save my cat. I most likely won't get either, but eventually I'd like to have a nice graded set. I'm just wondering if the additional expense is warranted.

    Thanks.. :)

Gold.. yuk.. and what get my hands all yellow :)

As many of these that will grade 67/68 will only increase and I don't believe the prices will stay this high once the novelty wares off. I would wait but I've been wrong before...

Well, if it was me, I think I'd get the PCGS set. You'd get a real nice set of coins for half the price. It's all up to you though.

He didn't ask about buying gold, though that would probably be my personal preference as well. :p

Actually, the most known addage here is "Buy the coin, not the slab". You could stack up 100 PCGS MS67's and they will all be different in one way or another. Some should be MS68, some MS 65.

Personally, I couldn't tell the difference to save a cat either....but then again, if I knew a cat was on the line and I had to make the choice, I'd probably say MS60....give me a command responding good for hunting dog over a flea bitten furball primadona any day :p

More than likely NGC graded coins are better than PCGS...

You can only try to teach something to a younger one but you can't make them listen.

For about $96 dollars you can get PROOF condition gold from the US Mint at a time when gold is pushing new highs in the market.

A 200X alloy nickle or cad coin for over 100 dollars? This is the ultimate in hype. And god forbid someone in the mail drops those coins!

The market is telling you that the MS-68 NGC is a better coin
than an MS-67 PCGS on these coins. Whether the difference
is worth the extra money is another question.

I wouldn't necessarily suggest you buy raw but sometimes if you
have the opportunity to look through a few of these sets you can
get superb quality for little cost. Keep in mind that it might be
more than a few sets that you'll have to look through to match
    even the MS-67 coins.

Why do you say that? there is plenty of doubt about the future value of gold.

In a lot of cases PCGS 67's sell for more than NGC 68's.

Sorry I don't mean to ignore your advise totally, but I really enjoy nickels. Now my wife on the other hand really enjoys gold. As a matter of fact I have purchased her 2 1/10 oz gold eagles. She wears them alternately in a bezel. 2002 for an anniversary present, and an MCMLXXXVI just because. If I just bought the proof coin she'd want it broken out and made into jewelry. For my own sanity, I stick with nickels.

As for nickels being so expensive I agree, hype yes.. Thanks to the Westward Journey series new nickel collectors with oodles of disposable income have doubled the price of just about anything short of pocket change. Personally, I feel if I can get 4 limited edition coins (1.3 million produced versus 300 billion circulated) for $20 a piece of so, graded by a reputable TPG i'm not going to be too upset about the price. But if you think this is bad.. try $250 for a MS69 satin finish buffalo.

Personally I wouldn't pay that for either of them. I agree - there will be more, many more graded by each of the companies in the 67 - 68 range. NGC has already graded over 1000 of them as 67 and 100 as 68 (almost 300 for the P Bison).

I'd just search the shows and shops and pick out a nice set or two if it was me.
