It seems inevitable. Sooner or later, a Sacagawea Dollar is going to find its way through the edge lettering segment intended only for the new Presidential Dollars. After all, the Sacagawea Dollar, which has been made since the year 2000, is mandated by law to be struck in numbers that are no fewer than 1 Sacagawea for every 3 Presidential Dollars struck (at least 25% of the total dollar mintage,) supposedly for the purposes of "continuity." Never mind that the mintage of year 2000 Sacagaweas, which exceeded 1.2 billion coins, is still sitting, largely undispersed, in various bank and Fed vaults around the country because nobody wants to use them. But the new Sacagawea has been upgraded! It gets the nicer, shinier bright golden tone of the Presidential Dollar, plus it gets the treatments that will prevent it from tarnishing and looking like a third-world nickel after 3 weeks in someone's pocket. So far, this new process of shining and finishing the dollars is working well. Mine are still nice and bright, despite being in my purse just over a month now. Other people tell me their "test specimens" are holding up well, too. So maybe there is hope that the U.S. Dollar coins will at least look nice in twenty years, even though most people still won't use them until the U.S. removes the paper dollar bill from circulation (in other words, people won't use them until they're forced to.) Top-notch coin grading service PCGS has offered a $10,000 reward for the first Sacagawea Dollar with Presidential edge lettering on it to arrive at their offices. The best thing about this offer is that you don't even have to let them keep the coin; they're offering the reward just to be the first coin grading service to slab one! The 2007 Sacagawea Dollars have been available since Tuesday, March 20, so the next big error coin treasure hunt is underway! ALTERED: EDGE LETTERING REMOVED - 26.21 mm - 7.89 g GENUINE: NO EDGE LETTERING - 26.46 mm - 7.98 g
Thanks for the info Twiggs. I've read a little about this somewhere else to, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled. Thanks for the info. Phoenix
thanks for the information, I just a normal collector, not a dealer, so there , I will probly never see the coins, unless I buy mints roll form the dealers, or off e-bay, where the dealers buy bulk. so I will never be able to hunt for the coin. I don't have that kind of money just to see if there is a coin of that . so good luck for all of ya. happy hunting.
I purchased a roll of 2007-P Sacs from the mint, and had them opened and layed out on my desk. As soon as I read this I went back over to my coins to have a look. My girlfriend had restacked the coins as she was cleaning up. I took one look at the stack and almost yelled out in excitment. Right there on the coin in the middle, the edge lettering from the presidentials dollars! I pulled it out right away. ...Turns out I had forgotten that I had a Washington dollar sitting next to them for comparison, which my girlfriend had placed in the stack along with the Sacs. Couldn't help but laugh at myself...
I've been spending these dollar coins since the first day they came out. While they have still retained some luster, they are not faring much better than the sacagaweas. I carry no less than 20 to 30 in my pocket at all times so I can pay for almost every small purchase with them. Just doing my best to get them circulated.
