Has anyone else seen this? I did a quick search and didn't see any threads about it. I was cruising the PCGS website and stumbled across a limited time promotion where you can request to have your submitted coins graded with retro labels. PCGS Generation Series Labels Since this is a limited time offer and the link will probably disappear in the future, I think it is a good idea to include photos of the available options. This toned Silver Eagle looks good in the doily label. Just wondering what everybody thinks of these retro labels?
there was a thread recently over at CU about these, and overall not too many people like them. I personally think they are ok.
I don't really get the point of it, unless maybe someone has a lot of older coins and wants all the labels to look the same.
I have a few gold coins awaiting grading. I sent them before these came out, but I was able to call and get them added to my submission. I am doing the doily holder.
So you don't think that the big generation shield on the reverse of the label is enough to distinguish these from the original labels? At some point, caveat emptor needs to apply. If the person is educated enough to know what an OGH is, then they should be able to discern the difference between these retro labels and the real thing.
...I still see the blue holders which have been sun bleached being touted as old holders on a daily basis. I predict it will be done and there will be custies. The number of folks who know just enough to get themselves into trouble seems to be a rather large group in this hobby. (Fwiw, I'm not much of a fan of any of the fancy (manufactured collectible) slabs so my opinion is definitely skewed.)
Agreed the Doily will probably be the most popular. Can't imagine the 4.0 all blue will get much action. I like 1.0 as well though I'd like them all a little more if they were cheaper
As I've said in the past, I'm thankful for people that pay up for this stuff, as it subsidizes the services I actually use.
I doubt they really subsidize any of their other services. It's not like they are going to lower their grading costs any if they make bank off of these, lol
My thoughts resemble what others have said: cool idea, but the font looks off and the extra cost doesn't seem worth it. PCGS has also already done the doily label and OGH (green labels) in the past year or two. In my opinion, the best reissue was when NGC brought back the black core holders (the later addition of red holders also looks nice for some coins). Unfortunately NGC did not go all the way and slab coins backwards (logo on front) as with the original black core holders.
No, but these add-ons that have almost no cost to the grading service are keeping the grading prices from going up faster. If they couldn't sell the labels and other gimmicks, you'd see higher grading fees.
Well you can thank me then, cause I got a couple of the doily ones, lol. I'm looking forward to seeing them (in probably a couple months, as slow as pcgs has been lately!), and I hope the coins straight grade.
