I was researching listings for the 1872 CC Quarter and came upon this one in a prominent dealers inventory certified by PCGS VG8. http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/image/22009338.html My question: from the pictures I can see a number of small but distinct cuts around the periphery on the obverse. I thought PCGS applied strict standards and would only certify such coins, damaged as this one appears to be, as genuine. Or is PCGS being generous this being a rare date?
IMO it is at the threshold The marks are small and PCGS obviously thinks that they are within market acceptable limits for the rare date. If they bother you, then do not buy the coin. They would probably forever bother you if you owned the coin.
I agree, if this was a common date this coin would not have received a grade. However, due to the demand of a rare piece such as this they will be a bit more "forgiving" with grading. This is commonly seen with key dates.
Its what I thought then: I would not buy such a coin, the damage is beyond threshold for me. Consider also the coin is listed approx. 50 % over PCGS price for the grade.
Four marks on the rim.. Old Jewelry piece perhaps? Maybe they are chop marks? Interesting piece nonetheless. They are tough to find thats for sure.
