I was watching this nice 1859 Indian head cent pattern piece on ebay yesterday but I refrained from bidding since I didn't quite know the value of the piece. Quite frankly I do not know much about pattern piece rarity, except for the fact that they are quite valuable. The piece I saw was a Judd-228 Indian Head Cent graded PF-64. PCGS had this coin valued at $1,865 but I tend to think that PCGS values are too high. Can anyone help me determine an estimated range of possible values for this coin? Heritage auction archives have sold a few of these pieces but they have sold for many prices, ranging from about $1,200 to $3,000. Also it seems as though these patterns were more valuable about 10 years back (around 2003-2005). Why is this? Is there any books about pattern pieces? Is there a price guide for patterns? Thank You!
