Does anyone have any pictures of pattern dollars from the (1870-1880s) era. I have seen some in Pattern Books.I think these designs were some of the most beautiful US pattern dollar ? Liberia has copied a few of them.
http://uspatterns.com/1872.html http://uspatterns.com/pichisofpatc.html I'm fascinated by patterns. I used to think they were great... for people with $100,000 to spend on a single coin. I'm happy to say that quality patterns can be had for much, much less. Not pocket change, but not "millionaires only" either.
Depends on what you consider reasonable. I'll say this... we're talking about 19th century Proof 65s with great color and a mintage of 40 or 50. A regular issue coin would be 20 times as much - maybe 50x. Or more. Plus they're fascinating designs. It extends my type set past the "same ol' same ol'".
I think that Legend has a number of patterns in their inventory, with good photos. http://www.legendcoin.com/cgi-bin/inventory/itemlist.pl?category=Patterns
Pattern Designs These coins were reproduced by private mints from designs of US pattern, they are not Pattern Coins but show some of the proposed coins. The $100 Union was intended to be struck in Gold.I think 2 examples are in the Smithsonian Collection.Liberia has also copied the Washlady Pattern, these are not patterns.(copies,reproductions).
