Hi, I bought this coin a year ago at the Orlando Fun Show. I posted this photo on another DB and one of the members there noticed the legend on the reverse was wrong. My coin has EYEYP it should be EYEP. I sent an email and photos to Chris Hopkins of Parthia dot com. His reply was that he felt it was genuine. Some of you folks are very good and I would like your opinions. Thanks.

By way of explaining the strange spelling, all I can suggest is that it is an authentic error. The letters E and Y form a dipthong in Greek (sounding like 'eu'), and it could be an honest mistake of the designer to put it twice, or he thought it should be spelled that way. I'm assuming the word in question is the same as the Greek 'euergeteo' (to do good or bestow benefits).

Recall that in Parthia, Greek writing gradually became quite corrupted.

Parthian coins used crude and blundered Greek inscriptions,
    so mispellings would be common.

    The website:
    http://www.parthia.com
has lots of information on these coins.

    :)

Randy, I looked and looked also and couldn't find any EYEYP's either but I like Acanthite and Willie Boyd's expaination.

Ardatirion, I think this is the area you're talking about. Hope this helps.

    Thanks guys.[IMG]
