Yes I do but only pre 1945 :smile I collect Hungarian & Romanian at the moment and Mrs Orc collects Tzarist Russian notes & coins but not in a big way LOL
Maniek, there is some interest from people in Russia in the Russian Civil War banknotes. These are listed in the Pick Specialised catalogue. The only country in eastern Europe that I collect banknotes from is those from Cyprus, which is a British Commonwealth member state,& a country that is changing from Pounds to Euros next year. Aidan.
Aidan Cyprus isnt Eastern Europe its in the Med< I believe our new guy here is refering to the old East Block countries. :kewl:
Steve,Cyprus is geographically & culturally part of eastern Europe,as it has a culture & language similar to Greece, despite its location in the Mediterranian Sea. Maniek, are you referring to banknotes from countries such as Serbia,Albania,Kosovo,Bosnia-Hercegovina,Nagorno-Karabakh,& Estonia, just to name a few countries? Aidan.
Aidan once again you talk utter rubbish Cyprus is not classed as Eastern Europe and never has been, and here is one of your great wikki articles to prove it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Europe Yes Serbia and the others would fall into the Eastern European Catogary
Well, that was the only way to smuggle the "B."C. into this thread, I guess. Of course it is true that Cyprus is considered to be part of Europe not because of the country's geographic location but because of historic/cultural ties ... Would be helpful to learn what countries the original poster is interested in. Christian
Steve,as seen as Greece is classified as an eastern European country, because of its location, you might as well class the British Commonwealth republic of Cyprus as one,by virtue of its culture. Cypriot notes are not easy to find, unless you know someone that either lives there or goes there on a fairly regular basis. The same thing applies to the British Postal Orders issued at the British Field Post Offices in the Akrotiri & Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas, whose website can be found at www.sba.mod.uk . Aidan.
...but greece isn't classified as an eastern european country, it's classified as a western european country. modern europe owes much of it's culture to ancient greek civilization, and alexander the great brought western culture to the east. edit to add: to keep on topic, i collect eastern european banknotes. also western european. and northern and southern too. and everywhere not in europe.
SanMiguel,it seems strange that you think that Greece is located in western Europe, when it has Albania & Macedonia bordering it. Aidan.
info from: intro to eastern europe The countries in the Eastern European region are as follows: The Baltic Nations * Estonia * Latvia * Lithuania Central European Nations * Czech Republic * Hungary * Poland * Slovakia * Slovenia (sometimes) The Balkan Nations and the Southeastern European Nations * Republic of Macedonia * Serbia and Montenegro * Bosnia and Herzegovina * Bulgaria * Albania * Croatia (sometimes) * Slovenia (sometimes) European Nations Designated as simply "Eastern European" * Russia * Belarus * Ukraine * Romania * Moldova
The traditional Eastern Europe/Western Europe distinction has less to do with cardinal directions than political affiliation. The former communist countries in Europe are traditionally referred to as Eastern Europe. Western Europe is comprised of the non-communist countries. The list and map that San Miguel posted bear this out.
