alright, so here is the proplem. one of my coins is a german Rostock iron 3 pfennig, and today a small piece of the surface fell off due to corrosion under the surface, nothing to do about that now. but how do i prevent the entire surface from falling apart? should i coat it with lacquer? i have already a coin coated, but it was like that when i bought it (it is a german east africa coin, copper plated zink with a lacquer coat because the copper was beginning to peel off). how does it affect the coin and its value that it is coated? and is it worse that it is coated compared to it having its surface peeled off? im really annoyed by not knowing what to do in this case, especially because i now begin to fear that my other coins will start that too. any advice is very appreciated. thank you.

Proper storage is your best bet.

Describe to me how you have been storing your coins.

i have built a coincabinet, they lie on felt. its pretty dry, but im looking around for moistabsorbers to put inside the cabinet. but i dont think it is the storage at this point for the coin i described, it is fairly new in my colection. anything i can do to prevent that coin from falling apart, besides keeping it proper stored?

    STACKERDENNIS Keep Stacking!

Im sure coating the coin makes the value go down but if the whole face of the coin falls/peels off wouldn't the value go down even more then that. Its kind of a rock and a hard place situation. good luck

You can forget the silica gel packs as long as you use a coin cabinet, they won't work. Or I should say they won't do any good because a coin cabinet is little different than just leaving your coins sitting out on the table. For silica gel packs to work they require a closed/sealed container. As a matter of fact a coin cabinet all by itself is detrimental to your coins. Just how detrimental is dependent on the construction of your coin cabinet.

As for the specific coin you ask about, there's not much you can do about that. Best suggestion, get another to replace it.
