The Mint already commemorated the same thing 100 years ago :dead-horse:

How about the Panama Canal? or the capture of Noriega?

Kinda stupid , they already have a great commorative for the Canal . I'd rather have the original .

They had 2 columbians are well. i remeber goldine calling me up and pushing me to buy the at ridicules prices. I thought about it brought comic books instead, which did rather well, actually.

Ya know what burns me about this legislation? Another 'clad' half dollar. Why the devil can't they mint a 90% silver one? Ya wanna keep with tradition then do it 'old school'.

I just read that update. Have to wonder though, will it be a silver dollar or a gold dollar? The update lists gold, then silver. I think a gold dollar would be a good idea and generate a lot of interest.

Edit. I read it wrong. The reference to gold dollar was about the original commem.

They commemorated the completion of the canal, this would commemorate the centennial of the completion, not the same thing. Still a little odd to commemorate it since we no longer control it.

Well.. I suppose they could mint a zinc coin commemorating the give-away of the canal by Carter/Clinton. :(

These will be some of my favorite commems, yet that’s before seeing how the mint will screw them up. They should have been TOLD to use the original designs and mint the half dollar with 90% silver. If the mint believes they must mint a clad half, they could produce a 90% silver one as well, as they do with proofs.

I love your Signature icon of the Alaska state quarter. Its my favorite of the whole series.

I hear ya Ken. What I would really love to see is an open "design contest" that anyone could enter. Like the "old school" way. If that won't get more people interested in coins, then I don't know what will.

Thanks, I like it too, yet there are several state quarters I like. I picked the Alaska quarter because I collect bears too.

It's too bad they bill is calling for them to mint smaller versions of the $50 Pan-Pacs... it would have been great if they reissued them in the same size and weight as the originals. Of course, they had nearly 2.5 ounces of gold in them so the mint price of each would have had to be around $4500-$5000 per coin, but that would have kept the mintages really low too... also like the originals!

    Oh well!

LOL! Yep, the Cal Half was my first bear coin. I picked this raw one up from eBay for a bargain, the pics don't do it justice, as the toning is much more iridescent.
