Just got a new one in the mail to add to my small ancient countermark collection. Usually I have more trouble attributing the countermark, but this one has proven just the opposite - I can't find a reference for the host coin. The host coin is from Perga (Perge) in Pamphylia (I think!). The emperor is Septimius Severus, the reverse type, a reclining figure of the River God Cestrus. Here it is - I got it from eBay from a new seller with 0 feedback at the time I bid (I gladly gave him his second positive) I did find a host coin with an almost identical reverse type for Caracalla on the Asia Minor site - but I cannot find this "reclining river god" for Sept. Severus: https://www.asiaminorcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=265&pid=10669 As for the countermarks, they appear to be Howgego 334 and 513. I found an example in the “Collection Automan” on FORVM, the host coin is Caracalla, but the countermarks are a match to my example. The listing has some helpful information as well: “CM(2): A.K. in rectangular punch, 5 x 3 mm. Howgego 513 (43 pcs). Note: Countermark (2) was applied earlier than (1) which is found on coins of Severus Alexander while countermark (2) is not found on coins struck later than the reign of Elagabalus. Collection Automan.” http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=546&pos=154 Found another one, CNG auction, with the same countermarks. This one is for Septimius Severus, although with a different reverse type: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=95924 Here is another CNG with a Hadrian host: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=375540 Can anybody help me attribute the host coin? How about other coins from Perga (a place I'd never heard of until I started looking up info on this coin).
Neat! For coins of Asia Minor, I always go to the handy search interface Ed wrote for ISEGRIM. It yielded two hits for Septimius from Perga with a River-god reverse. http://isegrim.mybluemix.net/#!?po=Perga&vt=Sept&rt=River-god
