From another thread . . . we were wondering where the "dividing line" (so to speak) is between collecting mostly P or mostly D (or half/half) coins from circulation.

I'm from the DC area, and probably between 90% to 95% of my coins are P.

    What about others?

I live one hour from the Denver Mint. Most of the coins I see in circulation are 'D' mint coins.

I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong, east of the Mississippi gets the "P"s and west of the Mississippi gets the "D"s...

In general I think that is true but I think Chicago gets their coins from Denver. Can someone in Chicago confirm this? Also, does anyone know where Memphis gets their coins? (Memphis is on the east bank of the Mississippi.)

Being in the middle of the pacific I get mostly D MMs. Except for the 1982 D zincs. I still can't fill a roll of the 2 varieties.

It goes by Federal Reserve district. The districts usually order from the closest mint.

The Chicago FRB district is a "flip" district however. We are just about equal distant from ether mint. It does lean towards the D mint, but P coins can and DO show up that are distributed from the FRB. We got both P and D brand new DC quarters for example.

On circulated coins we are about a 50/50 mix of both mints with quite a few S marked coins still out there as well. (Cents and Susan Bs)

Wisconsin is a strong "D" state east of the Mighty Mississippi. I live four miles from Lake Michigan (the eastern most part), and it's still Denver Country. The only exception that comes to mind was the Nebraska quarter for some odd reason!

Hate to admit it but that is where I am. As to mint marks. From my experiences with the different ones it varies from year to year. Sometimes it takes all year to find a D one here. Other times that is all you find. And it is different with different denominations. There have been times when all Nickels, Dimes and Quarters are all D's and all the PENNIES, had to say that, are from Phily. I always think of the Chicago area as a dumping ground for what is left over someplace. I've gone for over a year without finding a new coin from Phily and we are so close. That makes no CENTS.

Also, not long ago I worked only a few blocks from the Fed Reserve downtown Chicago. So I always thought by getting coins from banks next door or so I would get something great. Not so. That, used to be LaSalle Bank, had lousy coins all the time. And they never let me in that Federal Researve Building, either.

When I lived in Louisville KY it varied some years you would get P some you would get D and in some years it varied by denomination P's for some and D's for others. We were in the distribution area of the St Louis Federal Reserve which is right on the Mississippi.

It may be because I live where a lot of snowbirds congregate for half the year from all over the US, but it seems it's about 60% D mint coins and 40% P mint coins where I am. Some denominations vary, such as cents, where I rarely see any D cents at all, where as most dimes are D. Kinda weird considering I'm almost as far west as one can get in the continental US.

SW Iowa is all D all the time... Only P's that show up are in circulation and takes about a year to start seeing them...

Here in Memphis we are almost all 'D' coins. Do not see many 'P's...Also the half dollars we see here are so sad. The casino just south of here used 'real" half dollars till just a few years ago. Slot machines turn any coin into a slug.
