20170906_234550.jpg 20170906_234533.jpg Has anyone ever seen one of these. I saw this at my LCS and it caught my attention but not sure what I am looking at. It weighs 9.7g and is on a couple mm smaller than a half dollar. I believe it is copper. My best guess has been foreign planchet.

You can't mint a cent on a half dollar sized planchet.
Are you weighing the entire thing? This looks like a coin has been put into a larger ring.

Notice the striations in the outter ring metal but not in the penny at all. 2 different pieces of metal... These 2 were not minted together

maybe one day I will send it in with a bunch to be graded.... just to feed the curiosity.

Notice the upset rims on the cent. That was there when the cent was pressed into the washer. There is no chance this would ever grade.

It's also possible this was going to be a Lucky Cent but was never struck with the dies.

Did you ask the owner of the Coin Shop? o_O
I'm sure he will tell you what it is. It's a normal Cent embedded into a round piece of metal that had a hole in the center. Nothing else. Do not waste your time and money to send it to a TPG. No need to get it attributed!

    It's a normal coin worth 2 to 3 cents.

I did but he wasn't sure either. Definitely different.

You should probably start your own thread.

Even though it's just a cent pressed into a washer, it's still a cool find :)

(If I were you, though, I wouldn't send it to be graded...)

Do not waste you money on sending it to be graded.... It is a normal cent pressed into a holed piece of metal...nothing more...

I would be really worried if a dealer/owner couldn't identify this as something that was done after it left the mint. I might start looking for a different Coin Shop. And if he said he didn't know because he didn't want to take the time to explain it to you, you may want to find another Coin Shop.

It looks to me like the penny had considerable wear on it at the time it was placed in the washer. With that, I could guess that it was not done at the mint. Probably made as a token for a girl friend - perhaps during the war.
