Hi- I picked up this $5 bill as change. When looking at it, I thought something was odd. Upon closer inspection, the "overprint" of the treasury seal seems to be an "underprint" in relation to the words "FIVE". Is this a printing error of some sort? The bill has a watermark and security strip in it, so it looks legit and normal except for this characteristic. Attached is detail of this overprint anomaly -- what do you think?
I compared it to quite a few... and its called an overprint because the green is printed over the black? Do you have any bills that appear like this? I'll take your word if you are sure
I agree it looks suspect, but it's normal for the green seal to appear underneath the second printing. Compare it to other notes. You'll see the same effect. Why does it look that way? I'm not sure.
Lousy print quality on the Treasury seal. It's been an ongoing problem at the BEP, although they've gotten a lot better in the past few years--this one is unusually bad for such a recent note. If you go back to the '90s, many or even most notes had Treasury seals like this. I think this is one of those things that will always be considered a distraction, rather than a printing error, just because of how common it was for a while....
