Hi. I didn't want to post this coin due to its worn condition, but 3 things convinced me to post. First the oval shape, then the confusion about whether the obverse is an Empress or an Emperor, and third the reverse which seems totally new to me. I appreciate your kind assistance to ID this coin. Thanks.. Charles
Theodosius I, I believe, GLORIA ROMANORVM type. On the reverse, the emperor is standing on a galley, with Victory at the helm.
From http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/ go to type 20 and click to get to http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/type20.html where we are told which rulers used the type. Of them one ends -sivs so you have Theodosius I. It is often easiest on the coins of this period to work backwards if you can ID the reverse type and see who used it. Try to make out the letters under the ship to get the mint ID. I can not see them in the photo. The T cross in the left field will narrow it down a bit but we really need some of the mintmark to be sure.
How sure are you that this is Theodosius? I was thinking more along the lines of Arcadius, Antioch mint. All the Theodosius coins I see show the obverse helmeted while this one I believe is diademed. Doug posted while I was typing, so I suppose it is Theodosius?
Gloria Romanorium is for sure. As for the exergue, it might be Antioch in the abbreviation form of ANTS. But I am not sure.. Charles
The legend look clear for -SIVS PF AVG at right. If Arcadius, you need to explain that S. Is it SMKB Cyzicus RIC 23? This is not a rare coin. I really encourage those new to the hobby to buy identifiable common coins. I still buy junkers when I think I see something interesting and often end up regretting it as well. I do not own this one with the T but I have an Alexandria with wreath where the OP has a T. Mine is a bit unusual (How? - have I shown it before?) and was shown in a Numismatist many years ago (before I bought it in 1991) but I have lost the reference. If anyone happens to have old magazines and sees it, I would love to know the issue.
